What do you call a ½ Black, ½ Indian, bald-headed, liberal, Quaker, lesbian?
I’ll never forget the day that PJ appeared in my door.
Sure, she was one of my biggest clients so I had to be nice to her…but we had a bond on the phone that superseded the typical client relationship. Then she decided to fly down from Detroit to meet my staff.
There she stood in her stunning white business suit…all ½ Black, ½ Indian, shaved head, liberal Democrat, and proud lesbian self that she was.

And oh, by the way, the biggest, warmest, most loving smile I had ever seen. She was pretty much the embodiment of every thing I had never met and pretty sure I stood against.
We talked about and shared so many things. We challenged and kept each other honest. Then I left the business and any trace of PJ. But 15 years later Zuckerberg invents this web app that allowed PJ, me, and 500 million other people to find each other again.
We reconnected a few months ago. Its still there. She is still everything she was and I’m still white, born-again, bald (we have that in common now), conservative, and very straight.
Have we discussed 1 Corinthians 9, Leviticus 18, and Romans 1 about homosexuality? Yep. And likewise, I’ve been reminded of Proverbs 6:16-19…a quick little list of 6 or 7 things that God hates…and I am guilty of all of them. And by the way, there aren’t 10 commandments, there are actually 613 in the Old Testament… and I have broken them all.
The Spirit convicts us of who we are…not man (John 16:7-11).
– We can dissuade, but we can’t damn.
– We can caution, but we can’t condemn.
– We can prompt, but we can’t pronounce.
– We can steer, but we can’t sentence.
– But we CAN and should always, always, always…LOVE.
So what do you call a ½ Black, ½ Indian, bald-headed, liberal, Quaker, lesbian? One of my closest friends and a real screw up like me that can only be saved by His grace and mercy.
Luv ya. PJ…even more than my luggage. See you soon I hope.
