When stale bread will taste like wedding cake…

I had the privilege last night of officiating the service of two friends. Two friends who wanted to publically share with their friends and family the marriage covenant they were making before God.
The terrestrial marriage agreement is easily handled by signing a license, having it witnessed, and sending a copy to the county court house. The celestial covenant is much more profound. And the ceremony to celebrate the union is full of exciting symbolism. There is the exchanging of rings, lighting of candles, reading of scriptures, and singing of songs.
But one of the most profound symbols is often overlooked. Its the giving away of the bride. Think of the celestial significance of a Father, giving a Bride, to a Son.
Last night as I watched her father say “her mother and I do” I couldn’t help but think of Ephesians 5 and Revelation 21 where we, the universal church, are compared to the Bride of Christ.
Imagine that day coming soon when the Heavenly Father will come to His Son and say “today is the day My son…go and get your Bride.” And in Luke 22 Jesus told us that He wouldn’t eat this bread or drink from this cup until He does so again at our wedding feast with Him and us, His bride, in Revelation. Luke even tells us about some of the guests at the great wedding feast….the feast to celebrate the reconciliation between Jesus and us, His bride.
And on that day, the day of our wedding feast…the bread of communion will become wedding cake…and will truly taste like the sweetest wedding cake we could ever imagine.
Congratulations my friends. And thank you for letting us each be reminded last night of how all of creation points to the Creator…even when we eat wedding cake and watch a father give away a bride.
